What can this calculator do?

  • Partial insulation: Accounts for an area without added insulation and separately shows the potential of insulating the remaining wall area.
  • Material Database: Contains approximate tabular thermal conductivity (Lambda) values for common structures and insulation materials.
  • Expert settings: Option to add windows, doors, thermal bridges, and climate zone for a more accurate calculation.
  • Instant Calculation: Automatically calculates both thermal resistance (R-value) and thermal transmittance (U-value).
  • Money Conversion: Enter your energy price and instantly see the annual heat loss in your currency.
  • Visual Charts: Clear comparison of savings by thickness, material, or by insulating the remaining area.
  • PDF Export: Generates a professional PDF report with charts and a detailed breakdown of losses.

Building Physics & Insulation Tips

⚠️ Golden Rule: Common Sense & Holistic Approach
This calculator computes heat loss through an ideal wall. In a real house, windows, roof, ventilation, and thermal bridges play a huge role. For an accurate energy performance certificate, always contact a certified engineer.
Thermal Transmittance (U-Value)Shows how much heat escapes through 1 m² of structure at a 1 Kelvin temperature difference. The lower the U-value, the better the structure insulates and the lower the annual energy loss.
Thermal Resistance (R-Value)Thermal resistance shows how well a structure slows down heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better. Adding insulation increases resistance and lowers heat transfer.
Lambda (λ)Lambda tells how well a material conducts heat. Lower lambda means better insulation. That is why thinner PIR/PUR can perform similarly to a thicker layer of standard EPS or mineral wool.
Thermal BridgesThermal bridges are weak spots such as lintels, ring beams, corners, anchors, plinths or balcony connections. Heat escapes faster there and condensation or mold often appears in these areas.
Dew Point, Moisture and Vapor DiffusionA damp structure insulates worse and can create mold risk. With old buildings, timber frames and internal insulation, always think about where water vapor can travel and where it may condense.
External vs. Internal InsulationIf possible, insulation is usually applied from the outside. Internal insulation is possible, but it must be designed very carefully because of dew point, moisture and mold risk.
How to choose a climate zoneThe climate zone in this calculator is not the lowest winter temperature. It represents an estimated average outdoor temperature during the heating season. A warmer zone gives lower losses, a mountain zone gives higher losses.
Indoor temperature mattersThe difference between 20 °C and 24 °C is not cosmetic. The bigger the indoor-outdoor temperature difference, the more energy escapes. A workshop, garage, bathroom and living room can therefore give different results.
Windows and doors are not just openingsWindow and door areas are subtracted from the wall and calculated using their own U-values. An old window can lose several times more heat than an insulated wall.
Ceiling and roof often decideWarm air rises, so a poorly insulated ceiling or attic can consume a large part of the savings from an insulated wall. The facade alone may not solve the whole building.
Floor and cold cellarA floor above a cellar, garage or ground behaves differently than a wall exposed to outdoor air. The loss is often lower than through a roof, but cold floors strongly affect comfort.
Ventilation and air leaksNot all heat escapes through materials. A lot of energy is carried away by air exchange, drafts, gaps, chimney effect or leaky windows. Older leaky houses can have very high ventilation losses.
Energy price changes paybackThe same insulation pays back differently with electricity, gas, wood or a heat pump. The more expensive the energy, the faster savings appear in money.
Insulation cost should mean the full systemFor a realistic price per area, include insulation, adhesive, anchors, mesh, render, labor, scaffolding and details. If you enter only the board price, the payback will look too optimistic.
When to call a designerCall a designer especially for internal insulation, damp masonry, heritage buildings, timber frames, flat roofs, complex assemblies, subsidy projects or official energy certificates. This calculator is an orientation tool, not a standard calculation.

UPDATES & CHANGELOG
+
v1.05 (October 2026)
  • Units in every language: You can switch between metric and imperial units in every language version of the calculator.
  • Calculation preserved: Switching units preserves the construction type, insulation assembly, areas, prices and expert settings. Unchanged values return without losing precision.
  • Clear manual changes: User-modified values are highlighted in yellow, making it easy to see which inputs differ from their defaults.
v1.04 (September 2026)
  • Added partial insulation support: you can enter the wall area that still remains without added insulation.
  • The calculator now separately evaluates the current partially insulated state and the potential after insulating the remaining wall area.
  • Added a dedicated remaining-area potential chart comparing the current annual heat loss with the heat loss after insulating the rest of the wall.
  • New result values show the additional possible energy saving and additional possible money saving from insulating the remaining area.
  • The PDF export has been aligned with the new results, including partial insulation, remaining-area potential and the correct chart for the current calculation state.
  • Solid wood / log wall construction now defaults to no added insulation when selected, while still allowing the user to add insulation manually afterward.
  • Result tooltips were cleaned up and the important notice in the results was visually softened so it does not overpower the main calculation.
v1.03 (September 2026)
  • Improved timber-frame wall logic: the calculator now better separates the wall structure itself from added insulation, so results make sense even for layered timber constructions.
  • When a timber-frame structure is selected, added insulation is safely preconfigured / disabled according to the current calculation mode to avoid misleading double-counting of insulation.
  • Updated result labels and status messages to make it clearer when the calculator evaluates the base construction, added insulation, or the before/after comparison.
  • Refined savings, insulation cost and return-on-investment handling for wall assemblies that already include insulation layers.
  • Improved PDF export: unified texts through the language dictionary, better PRO/BETA handling, clearer result badges and chart protection against cropped edge labels.
  • Fixed PDF layout across pages so important notices, charts and the page footer no longer collide.
v1.02 (August 2026)
  • Added comprehensive expert settings (windows, doors, thermal bridges, climate, roof, floor, ventilation).
  • Implemented a detailed breakdown of heat losses and monetary leaks.
  • New calculation of total insulation cost and Return on Investment (ROI).
  • Brand new PDF export with charts and a detailed calculation summary.
  • Complete rewrite of language logic and improved support for imperial units (US market).
  • Improved logic for the "no insulation" state (shows potential savings).
v1.01 (August 2026)
  • Official launch of the Heat Loss calculator with heat transfer visualization, insulation material comparison, and Return on Investment (ROI) calculation.
  • Added support for both metric and imperial units for the US market.
