Practical Applications

Mix Ratio Calculator & CalcWood Project

Watch a quick video introducing the entire CalcWood project. The video includes English subtitles.

What can this calculator do?

  • Weight & Volume: The calculator knows the density and automatically converts between grams/ounces and milliliters/fluid ounces.
  • Calculate from Dims: Enter length, width, and thickness (or coats) to get the exact required amount.
  • Smart Batching: Select your cup size and get a recipe split into full batches and the remainder.
  • Cost & Waste: Enter your package price to see exactly how much a specific pour costs, including waste.
  • Market Comparison (PRO): See how your current mix compares in price to other brands on the market.
  • Visual Preview: Instant SVG drawing of the liquid level in your mixing cup.

Practical Tips for Perfect Mixing

⚠️ Golden Rule: Technical Data Sheet (TDS)
Always use the manufacturer's TDS as your primary source. This calculator and tips are practical workshop guidelines, not a replacement for official instructions.
Safety & VaporsWork in a ventilated area and use PPE according to the safety data sheet. For organic vapors, an A2 filter mask is commonly used.
Workshop ClimateA stable temperature around 20–22°C (68–72°F) suits most 2K systems. Cold mixture is thicker and releases bubbles poorly.
Weight vs. VolumeNever confuse weight and volume ratios. Components often have different densities, so 100 ml does not necessarily weigh 100 grams.
Scale AccuracyUse a precise digital scale for small batches. A standard kitchen scale can be dangerously inaccurate for small amounts.
Minimum BatchMixing too little (e.g., under 20g / 1 oz) drastically increases the risk of ratio inaccuracy, and the mixture may not cure at all.
Pot LifeOnly mix what you can process in time. A large volume mixed in a cup cures (and heats up) much faster than a poured thin layer.
Mixing TechniqueMix slowly and thoroughly. Carefully scrape the sides and bottom of the cup where unmixed material often hides.
Two-Cup MethodAfter the first mix, pour the blend into a second clean cup and mix again. This drastically reduces the risk of sticky spots.
Pigments & FillersAdd dyes and metallic powders sparingly (usually max 5-10% by weight). Too much pigment can disrupt curing, alter the mixture's behavior, or increase bubbles.
Waste FactorSome mixture always stays on the cup walls or absorbs into the wood. For most projects, plan for a 5–10% reserve depending on the substrate's porosity.
Wood MoistureWood should be dry and stable, ideally around 8–12% MC depending on the project. Excess moisture causes poor adhesion, cloudy resin, and endless bubbling.
Sealing MoldsResin finds every hole. Carefully seal the mold, corners, through-knots, and cracks (e.g., with silicone or hot glue) before pouring.
Seal CoatWood is porous. A thin seal coat of epoxy brushed onto the edges helps prevent air from escaping and forming bubbles during the main pour.
Bubble RemovalCarefully remove bubbles with a torch or heat gun. Move the flame quickly to avoid burning the surface. Always verify that the material manufacturer allows this.
Pouring in LayersPour thicker sections in stages exactly as recommended by the manufacturer. Never exceed the maximum allowed thickness per layer.
Exothermic ReactionEpoxy generates heat as it cures. Too thick of a layer or a large volume left in a cup can dangerously overheat (boiling, cracking).
Dust ProtectionImmediately cover the fresh surface against dust and insects. Resins and lacquers act as perfect dust traps during their cure time.
Test SampleAlways do a small test pour when using a new brand or expensive wood. You'll verify the color, curing, bubbles, and reaction with the substrate.

UPDATES & CHANGELOG
+
v1.06 (October 2026)
  • Units in every language: You can switch between metric and imperial units in every language version of the calculator.
  • Calculation preserved: Switching units preserves the selected material, mix ratio, measurement method, calculation mode, prices and expert settings. Unchanged dimension values return without losing precision.
  • Smart cup selection: If the selected metric cup has no direct equivalent among US cup sizes, the calculator safely switches to automatic cup selection.
  • Clear manual changes: User-modified values are highlighted in yellow, making it easy to see which inputs differ from their defaults.
v1.05 (July 2026)
  • Complete revision and expansion of practical educational cards (now 18 tips in a clean grid).
  • Refined safety formulations regarding Technical Data Sheets (TDS), wood moisture, pigments, and bubble removal.
v1.04 (July 2026)
  • Implemented safety validation for maximum pour thickness (warning for exothermic reaction risk with epoxies).
  • Added a warning when mixing too little material below the manufacturer's safe limit.
  • Added new deep pour epoxies to the database and smart badges for imported products (EU/US).
v1.03 (July 2026)
  • Added a PRO module for market price comparison. The calculator now compares your current mix with other products in the database and shows the price difference.
  • Smart batching: If the mix doesn't fit in one cup, the calculator automatically breaks the recipe down into full batches and a remainder.
v1.02 (July 2026)
  • Added full fraction support for the imperial system (inches) for the US market.
  • Automatic conversion between weight and volume for all results based on material density.
v1.01 (June 2026)
  • Official launch of the Smart 2K Mixing calculator with dynamic SVG cup preview and internal product database.
