UPDATES & CHANGELOG
+
v1.00 ( March 2026)
  • Unique feature: Time-dependent sag modeling. Unlike standard tables, this calculator accounts for material creep. You will see the exact sag at installation, after 5 years, and the final state after 10+ years.
  • First public release of the calculator.
  • Support for particleboard, MDF, plywood, and solid wood.
  • PRO features: Effect of fixed mounting and adding a stiffening lip (edging).
  • Dynamic SVG drawing visualizing the bending curve.
  • PDF report generation and configuration sharing via URL.

Shelf Sag Calculator & Calcwood Project

Watch a quick video introducing the entire Calcwood project and explaining why these tools are created. The video includes English subtitles (other languages available in player settings).

What can this calculator do?
  • Time-based calculation: Unlike common calculators, it doesn't just solve the immediate state but simulates material creep. You'll get an estimated sag upon installation, after 5 years, and after 10+ years.
  • Various materials: Supports technical calculations for particleboard, MDF, OSB, plywood, and solid wood (soft and hard).
  • Two load modes: Choose whether the shelf will be loaded uniformly (books, folders, clothes) or with a center point load (heavy statue, TV).
  • Calculates safe capacity: Not only does it verify your input, but it can also reverse-calculate the safe load the shelf can handle to remain visually straight over the years.
  • Mounting and edge banding impact (PRO): Discover the impact of fixed side mounting or adding a reinforcing edge (lip) to the front or back.
  • Interactive visual preview: Everything you tweak is instantly updated in a clear visual layout, including an exaggerated sag curve for better visualization.
  • Pro PDF reports: Download your results with a single click as a clean, professional report ready to be attached to your project.
  • Save and share: Easily save your configuration via a unique URL and return to it anytime later.
  • Metric & Imperial units: The calculator works seamlessly in both millimeters/kilograms and inches/pounds.

How does the calculator compute sag over time? (The Physics Behind It)

Wood and board materials have an important characteristic – they can continue to sag over time under constant load. This phenomenon is known as creep. Therefore, the calculator doesn't just compute immediate sag, but also uses an indicative model of long-term deformation based on common structural principles and approaches used in timber structure design (e.g., Eurocode 5).

While solid wood typically changes less, for particleboard, MDF, and other board materials, the sag after several years can be significantly higher than at installation—sometimes even multiplying. The calculation in this tool thus provides an indicative technical estimate of the material's behavior after 5 and 10 years in a standard dry interior. The results serve as a great guide for better visualization and safer furniture design, but they do not replace a professional structural engineering assessment.
