Tread Design Mode
?
Automatic mode calculates an ergonomic going from the total height and maximum available run. Fixed mode keeps the entered overall tread board depth including the nosing and checks whether the resulting staircase fits.
Top Mounting
?
Dropped: The last step is below the floor level (the floor forms the last tread). Flush: The stringer is level with the floor.

What can this calculator do?

  • Ideal Stride: Automatically recalculates inputs based on Blondel's rule and monitors ergonomics (warns against extremely steep stairs).
  • Running Dimensions: Generates precise measurements for stringer layout (start, center, and end of the notch) – just hook your tape measure at the start and make marks.
  • No-Protractor Layout (PRO): A unique feature giving you marks for the back edge of the stringer. Connecting marks on the front and back edge gives you the exact cut angle. Layout using only a tape measure!
  • First Step Cut: Automatically drops the stringer by subtracting the tread thickness from the bottom cut so all steps are equal in height after installation.
  • Stringer Throat Check: Calculates exactly how much solid wood remains after cutting notches and provides a recommendation if the stringer is too narrow for standard stairs.
  • Interactive Visual Preview: Everything you tweak is instantly updated in a clear visual layout.
  • Pro PDF Reports: Download results with a single click as a clean, professional carpentry plan.
  • Save and Share: Easily save your configuration via a unique URL and return to it anytime later.
  • Metric & Imperial Units: The calculator works seamlessly in both millimeters and inches.

Basic Rules and Terminology for Stair Building

Building stairs follows strict rules based on years of carpentry experience and human ergonomics. Here is a quick overview of the most important terms you should know before cutting:

Ideal Step (Blondel's Rule) The basic rule for comfortable stairs is: 2 × riser height + stringer going = approximately 630 mm, or about 600–650 mm. The calculator uses Blondel’s rule to calculate the ergonomic layout.
Riser Height For comfortable interior stairs, a height of 170–180 mm (approx. 7") is recommended. Above 200 mm, stairs become very steep and less safe.
Tread Depth The net horizontal area for the foot. The practical ideal range is 270–300 mm (approx. 10.6–11.8") to safely accommodate a whole foot.
Two Tread Design Modes Automatic mode designs the depth from the rise, ergonomics, and available space. Fixed Depth mode preserves the physical tread board size you already have or need to use.
Tread Board vs. Stringer Going The overall physical board depth includes the nosing. The actual horizontal stringer going therefore equals the overall board depth minus the nosing.
Available Stair Run In Fixed Depth mode, the calculator checks whether all steps fit within the entered space. If they do not, it keeps your board depth unchanged and shows the actual required run.
Stringer Throat The narrowest part left after cutting notches. Carpenters recommend keeping at least 115–120 mm (4.5") of solid wood for standard loads.
First Step Cut (Dropping) The bottom cut of the stringer must be shortened by exactly the tread thickness. Otherwise, the first step would be higher than the rest.
Tread Nosing Increases the total stepping area. Usually 20–30 mm. Helps significantly when walking down by providing more heel space.
Sawn vs. Housed Stringers Calculator dimensions are universal. Use them for cutting teeth on sawn stringers or as precise guides for routing housed stringer grooves.
Headroom Don't forget your head! The vertical distance between the step edge and the ceiling above should be at least 2100 mm (83").
Top Mounting Stringers can end "dropped" (floor above acts as the top step) or "flush" (stringer is level with the floor and a tread is mounted on top).

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
+
v1.06 ( October 2026)
  • Units in every language: You can switch between metric and imperial units in every language version of the calculator.
  • Settings preserved: Switching units preserves the selected stair type, expert settings and manually entered dimensions. Unchanged values return without losing precision.
  • Clear manual changes: User-modified values are highlighted in yellow, making it easy to see which inputs differ from their defaults.
v1.05 ( September 2026)
  • CalcWood Advisor: I added a quick calculation review that highlights important points before building the stringer.
  • Ergonomics check: The Advisor evaluates riser height, stringer going, the Blondel relationship and the overall staircase pitch.
  • Limited available space: If the available run does not allow the ideal going, the Advisor explains that the calculator had to reduce it and that the resulting staircase will be steeper.
  • Stringer throat check: The result warns about an indicative borderline or critically small amount of material remaining below the cut steps.
  • Stringer length check: For long stringers, the Advisor warns about possible deflection, twisting, support conditions and actual loading.
  • Safety notice: The Advisor clearly states that this is only an indicative workshop check, not a structural calculation or code assessment.
v1.04 ( September 2026)
  • Fixed overall tread board depth: I added a new expert mode that lets you enter the required physical depth of the complete tread board, including the nosing.
  • Correct nosing deduction: The calculator subtracts the entered nosing from the overall board depth to determine the stringer going without increasing the fixed board size.
  • Available run validation: If stairs with the requested fixed depth do not fit within the available run, the calculator shows the required length instead of changing the entered tread depth.
  • Sharing and PDF: The selected mode and fixed board depth are preserved in shared links, saved configurations, email exports and PDF plans.
v1.03 ( September 2026)
  • Clearer stringer drawing: I improved the placement of the main dimensions in the SVG preview so labels overlap less and stay readable even on short and steep stairs.
  • Better mobile layout: I adjusted the drawing scale, canvas width and dimension positions to make the preview easier to use on smaller screens.
  • More readable labels and dimensions: I moved problematic labels such as board length, first-step shortening and board width so they do not sit on top of the structure or other dimensions.
  • Smarter input validation: If the entered dimensions create invalid geometry, the calculator now warns you and, for board width, can offer a button to apply the maximum usable value.
  • Fixed error action behavior: The max board width action button is shown only when it really makes sense – for invalid board geometry, not for common input errors like too low total height.
  • U-shaped stairs: I improved support for two-flight U-shaped stairs, including the landing, top view and upper-flight notch detail.
v1.02 ( June 2026)
  • Added full fraction support for the imperial system (inches). When you switch the calculator to inches, all results and PDF exports are now automatically displayed in easy-to-read fractions (up to 1/16 inch precision).
  • Decimal numbers entered as input are automatically converted to the nearest practical fraction, making workshop tasks much easier.
v1.01 ( May 2026)
  • Stringer Shape Dimensions: Added a new table with 4 points for easy floor and landing end cuts without a protractor.
  • Running Dimensions Correction: Adjusted running dimensions for treads (removed back edge on the last step which is in the air) and refined texts.
v1.00 ( April 2026)
  • Automatic Tread Deduction: I'll adjust the first step height for you based on the tread thickness.
  • Marking Without a Protractor: I created a running dimensions table. All you need is a tape measure and a pencil.
  • 1:1 Template: You can print the exact step shape in full scale and make a solid template from it.
  • Back Edge Layout: I calculate marks for both sides of the board to ensure perfectly parallel tread lines.
  • Material Check (Throat): I'll give you an estimate of the remaining material to ensure the stringer isn't visually too weak. (Not a structural calculation!)
  • Ergonomics Guard: You'll instantly see if the step rhythm is comfortable or if the stairs are too steep.
  • PDF Export: I'll send the full calculation to your email as a clear drawing of the stringer details.
